The light at the end of the tunnel for Hamas is most likely not there. Not when Israel, consumed with rage, retaliated following the Oct 7th barbaric massacre reminiscent of the Holocaust’s unspeakable atrocities. I doubt Israel will take many prisoners.
- Not when Muslim Madrassas teach young children to hate Jews.
- Not when Palestinian families are monetarily rewarded for suicide bombers seeking martyrdom for killing Jews.
- Not when Hamas’ charter sanctions wiping Israel off the face of the earth. A two-state solution is off the table.
- Not when the command in the Quran to kill infidels if they refuse to convert to Islam is interpreted literally.
- Not when Muslim terrorist groups like Hamas declare Jihad- Holy War.
- Not when many in the world accept atrocities by Hamas as a moral equivalent with perceived Palestinian occupation and oppression by Israel.
The checkered, black and white Kaffiyeh, head scarf, is the iconic symbol of Palestine. Yet, historically, Palestine has never been fully recognized as a country or state in the Levant. Following WWII, the Balfour Agreement created Israel in 1948. Palestine was a British Protectorate until then. Israel occupied Gaza until 2005 when Hamas defeated the PLO in an election. Since 2006, it is inaccurate or propaganda to refer to Gaza as “occupied.”
Do the protestors parading Palestinian flags know this history?
Palestinian nomadic history spans over a millennium. They are over half of Jordan’s 9 million population, and another half of a million are “refugees” in Syria and Lebanon. Israel is about the size of New Jersey. Gaza is a small slip of land on the Mediterranean and Egypt borders, about 26 miles long, and 10 miles wide. That makes collateral damage highly likely. War is a zero-sum reality. Both sides will have “victims.”
Don’t confuse Hamas with ordinary Palestinians. They are hardcore terrorists conducting a fanatical Holy War. Their Keffiyeh’s should read “Jihadists-R Us.” Their brutality is on par with ISIS. It would be a mistake for Israel not to eradicate Hamas this time around. In 2003 and 2014 they missed their best chance.
Mohammed Dief and Yahya Sinwar are still alive commanding Izz ad-Din al-Qassam brigades responsible for the October 7th attack. By coincidence or prescience, both terrorists were antagonists in my novel, Zachor, published in 2020. IDF destroyed only half of the tunnels in the 2014 seven-week war in Gaza. A premature cease fire gave Hamas a survival opportunity. This was a mistake Israel does not want to repeat this time around.
There will be no light at the end of the tunnels when Hamas is eradicated and the tunnels are demolished.
To understand more of this complex history, you are invited to read a synopsis of Zachor.
